Technician Locations
Beyond vehicle GPS, RoutePilot tracks technician presence from the mobile app. This shows you where technicians are relative to their assigned stops throughout the day.
Presence vs. Vehicle GPS
| Type | Source | What it shows |
|---|---|---|
| Vehicle GPS | Hardware GPS device in the vehicle | Precise vehicle location, continuous |
| Technician Presence | Mobile app check-in | Location at key job events (arrived, complete) |
Both sources complement each other. Vehicle GPS shows continuous movement; technician presence shows status-linked location events.
Viewing Technician Locations
From the Dispatch board:
- Each technician column shows their current status
- A Live badge appears when the technician has recently updated
- Click the technician column header to see their last known location and current stop
From Fleet → Technicians:
- A map view shows all technicians with their last reported location
- Color coding indicates status (en route, on-site, idle)
Presence Status
| Status | Meaning |
|---|---|
| En Route | Technician is traveling to the next stop |
| On Site | Technician is at a customer location |
| Idle | No recent activity |
| Offline | App not reporting (closed or no signal) |
Presence updates when a technician taps Arrived or Complete in the mobile app. It also updates from passive location background reporting if the technician has granted location permission.
Location Permissions
Technicians must grant the RoutePilot mobile app Always location permission for background location reporting to work. If a technician is showing as Offline unexpectedly, check that they have not restricted location to Only While Using.
To check on mobile:
- Go to device Settings → Privacy → Location Services
- Find RoutePilot
- Set to Always
Note
Location data is only used for operational dispatch visibility and route history. It is not shared externally.
